Trust the Lord for Everything
The LORD is my shepherd.
I am never in need.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside peaceful waters.
Psalm 23:1-2
You can trust the Lord for everything you need when he is your shepherd.
In this age-old psalm, David, the shepherd who became king, takes the position of a sheep, a creature utterly dependent on a herder’s care.
Sheep move in constant agitation when insecure, but David rests in lush grass. Unlike the fear sheep feel beside quickly-moving rivers, the Lord guides his own to still waters. David seeks refreshment, direction, protection, and boldness from God. While his enemies observe, the Lord provides him with luxurious food, heaps fragrant oil on his head, and fills his cup beyond what it can contain. David relies on God’s constant love daily and fully anticipates living forever with him. David has everything he needs, with the Lord’s guidance.
Admitting you are a sheep demands modesty. Leaning on the Lord means entirely relying on him, realizing he holds loftier wisdom and might than you. Allow that mindset of dependency to fill your prayers. Tell God you rely on him to supply you with everything you need.
