A Prayer for Unity
I pray that all of these people continue to have unity in the way that you, Father, are in me and I am in you. I pray that they may be united with us so that the world will believe that you have sent me.
Unity doesn’t come naturally to flawed people.
In the final hours before his death, Jesus didn't have time to waste. Shortly before his arrest, he talks to his Father about his most pressing concerns. At the top of his list comes the topic of how you get along with other believers.
As Jesus prays in John 17, he speaks first about himself, asking the Father to give him the glory he had in heaven. He prays for his early followers, urging their protection in the tests about to come. He wants his joy to fill them and his truth to make them holy.
As he turns to those who will believe in him in every time and place, his primary prayer is for our unity. Only as we live as close to each other as Jesus does to the Father will the world know he is real.
Praying for authentic connections with other believers might not be at the top of your prayer list, but Jesus put it at the top of his. Ask God to bring you and all believers into the tight embrace shared by the Father and the Son.
